Instructions

  1. Get out your tape measure. Figure out where the highest point in the room is in both directions and measure.
  2. To get the length of the room, figure out where the highest point in the room is in both directions and measure from highest point to highest point.
  3. Repeat this process to get the width of the room. Always measure from wall to wall if you have them in place.
  4. Be sure to write down both numbers and write the words length and width next to the proper measurements. This will help keep you from getting confused when you make your order for the actual flooring.
  5. Make certain that if you are flooring a kitchen you move the refrigerator and stove if possible. This will give you a more accurate measure. If you have a dishwasher, call a professional to come in and take it out and put it back in when you are done installing the flooring. Dishwashers are tricky because depending on the height of the flooring you can actually seal it in to place which would be tough to get out when it needs to be serviced.
  6. Measure your house when it is quiet. The biggest mistakes are made when the person who is measuring gets distracted from what he is doing.
  7. Add an extra couple of centimetres to your measurements to insure you have some extra flooring around for mistakes.
